SEO for small businesses in South Africa: what matters first

Most small businesses do not need a national SEO campaign. They need to be findable in their own suburb, and that is a much shorter list of work.

Start with local, not national

Ranking for 'plumber' nationally is a budget war. Ranking for 'plumber Milnerton' is a solvable problem, and it brings people who can actually book you.

Local intent searches convert far harder than informational ones because the person searching has already decided they need the service.

Google Business Profile is the highest-return hour you will spend

Complete every field. Correct category, correct service areas, real photos, real opening hours, and a consistent business name, address and phone number that matches your website exactly.

Reviews matter, but only genuine ones. Ask satisfied customers directly and reply to every review, including the bad ones.

Give each service its own page

A single 'Services' page listing eight things ranks for none of them well. Eight focused pages, each answering one question a customer actually types, is the structural change that moves the needle.

Write the page for the customer, not for the search engine. Repeating a phrase fifteen times has not worked for a decade.

Speed and mobile are ranking factors and conversion factors

A large share of South African traffic arrives on mobile data, often on mid-range devices. A page that takes six seconds loses the visitor before it has a chance to rank.

Compress images, remove unused scripts and test on a real phone, not just a fast desktop connection.
