Why website speed matters more than your homepage design

The most beautiful homepage in the country cannot convert a visitor who left before it rendered.

Speed is the first impression

Before anyone sees your typography or your photography, they experience how long they waited. That wait sets the tone for everything that follows.

A slow site reads as an unserious business, fairly or not.

Where the time usually goes

Oversized images are the single most common cause. A 4MB photo scaled down in the browser still downloads at 4MB.

After that: too many third-party scripts, fonts that block rendering, and page builders that ship code for features the page never uses.

What good looks like

The main content visible quickly on a mid-range phone over mobile data. No layout jumping around as things load. Taps that respond immediately.

Those three outcomes are what Core Web Vitals measure, and they are what a visitor actually feels.

Design and speed are not opposites

Ambitious design and fast delivery only conflict when performance is treated as a cleanup task at the end. Decided up front, it becomes a design constraint like any other — and constraints usually make the work better.
